The Slogar Bar & Restaurant offers up family style, skillet-fried chicken dinners and has been known as a one of the best restaurants in Crested Butte.

The specialty skillet fried chicken is created from a world famous recipe dating back to 1915. Handmade baking powder biscuits, old-fashioned mashed potatoes, and rich chicken gravy have been a Crested Butte tradition for both locals and visitors for 30 years.

The Slogar building was built in 1882 by Thomas W. Lipcomb. It’s the second oldest building still in operation in Crested Butte! Kochevar’s wins.

Our building started as a home. When entering The Slogar, you are standing within the original structure. To the left
continues to be the home to the Slogar family. The family slowly built and added on rooms for a more comfortable
home for their family.

In 1976, after a long vacancy, The Slogar building was restored and converted into a restaurant. The Slogar has been offering family style, skillet-fried chicken dinners in Crested Butte since its inception in 1983.

This historical restaurant is now on its third owners: Ian and Ayla Scott.

  2. I had been travelling the world 10 times a year and spend vacations at ThePlaza in Mt Crested Butte
I have never had pork ribs anywhere as good as your restaurant presents. You need to believe I’ve tried them in multiple locations.
I’m now 81 and want to have your ribs again and I’m not sure how I’ll hold up on another trip but I reckon it’s worth 35 hours travelling from Perth, Western Australia just to get them again.

  4. My partner, Dave and I built that bar back in 1976. We also built the room dividers in the dining room. Great to see it all has stood the test of time and people are still enjoying the Slogar.

A little trivia: If you go to the far end of the front bar and look up at the back bar, you will see a row of mirrors that can only be seen from there.

If you are sitting in the center of the front bar, you will see a small area on the front rail routed out. We put a small brass plaque there that said, “Colorado Bar Builders, 1976” Apparently, that little plaque was pried off.

The room dividers with stained glass insets were built in 24 hours, the day before the place opened. We pulled an all nighter to get it done on time.

  5. Southern culture invades CB. Ever been to a church picnic in the South? This food is exactly like that, only better! Throw in a groovier atmosphere, some great cocktails and a friendly staff, and The Slogar is a must visit restaurant. I’ll be back.

  8. Oh my goodness what an amazing dinner tonight with my family of 5. Table was ready exactly at our reservation time – 3 courses top to bottom fabulous. Service was perfect and drinks / cocktails were spot on. Make reservations early and you will not be disappointed. .

  9. This is an incredible restaurant – food, atmosphere, and service. Well worth the visit, but make your reservations early.

  10. My wife and I ordered 4 entrees assuming we would be taking leftovers, we were wrong. We ate everything! The proteins were such high quality and truly captured my hankering for southern comfort food. You will not be disappointed, even made sure to buy a round for the kitchen staff. See you guys next time.

  11. Just wow! Atmosphere, food, service. Most nights you need a reservation, so blessed they were able to squeeze us in on a whim while we were visiting Crested Butte. Everyone was smiling and nice. The food was so amazing, think home cooking. I had filet, my husband had famous fried chicken. Our server was Sara and she was the best, very attentive and friendly.

  12. Love the Slogar so much. There is so much character and charm at this restaurant. The new owners have made some great changes in the last few years, including an expanded menu with ribs and vegetarian options. They also have their parlor menu which is perfect if you’re not up for the all you can eat experience. This is a great place to go with a larger group!

  13. We had an epic meal on the patio! The greeting, service, ambiance, and food were all 5 stars! We went for my brothers birthday celebration and the owner/hostess was fabulous to work with. She even took the time on a busy night to take my dad and I on a tour of the historical building and let us in on the all the previous owners and great stories of the past! Thank you all for the wonderful evening!

  14. Always good and now they have more menu items. Awesome service! I will say they need their original mashed potato recipe back in action. All else is perfect – drinks, atmosphere, fried chicken, ribs, and all the sides. This is a must do place when in CB.

  15. We had Chef Ian cater for our wedding and hands down it was the best meal ever! Everything from his menu planning, prep, communication, execution of the evening, and his personality (plus his amazing wife Ayla – who also is truly a gem!) made the evening perfect. The food was truly a masterpiece and we know that if he made what he did for us at our wedding, we cannot wait to get to Slogar to taste more of his magic! THANK YOU IAN!

  16. Fried chicken was like my mama made it. They were organized with orders as well. Nice job! Deducting a star only because we threw away sides we didn’t want and that is wasteful. Slogar, how about asking what sides people want instead of making us have cottage cheese and canned corn with cream gravy on it?

  17. Our favorite place in Crested Butte!
The staff is beyond kind and generous ~ our hostess Sarah M. is pure sweetness! ~ and the food is the best we’ve had so far! The chicken is juicy and fried to perfection and the biscuits are melt in your mouth buttery goodness. Beverages are fantastic and the three course meal was the perfect way to top off a full day on the slopes. We will recommend this place to any and all of our friends and we will definitely be coming back!

  18. This place does not disappoint. If you are looking for a family style dinner, with chic rustic decor, history, good food, and a full belly…look no further. And they take reservations, which I highly recommend you doing on Open Table. They never answer their phone from my experience so don’t waste your time. You are served three courses. Their first all homemade course you can choose from their salad, cole slaw (amazing), poached candied pears (dessert), cottage cheese, and tomato chutney (yum). The second homemade course you can choose either fried chicken (favorite) or ribeye steak or pot pie or ribs with mashed potatoes, gravy, strawberry jam, pull apart perfectly biscuits (omg), and creamed corn (ehh). The third course is vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top. I left so full of yum and it was a great rine with family. They do have a full bar and you can make substitutions at an additional cost. Our fried chicken meal was $25 per person , but I felt it was worth the experience and we only do this once a year. The ribeye and ribs coat more. Some things that would be nice to see adjusted: collard greens instead of creamed corn and fudge over the ice cream instead of chocolate syrup. Only negative, our waitress. She was not the friendliest or maybe it was a fake friendly…just not pleasant. She even gave me the are you serious/stupid stare when I was asking a question. But the rest of the staff was so helpful and nice. We will definately be back.
