The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
The Giver of Stars is a 2019 historical fiction novel by Jojo Moyes, set in rural Kentucky during the Great Depression, about a group of women who become packhorse librarians, delivering books to remote mountain communities and forming a strong bond of friendship while challenging societal norms. The story follows an Englishwoman, Alice, who seeks a more fulfilling life through the library program, navigating a difficult marriage and a patriarchal society. Inspired by the real-life Pack Horse Library Project, the novel explores themes of female empowerment, the power of literature, and breaking free from constraints.
This group *typically* meets every 4th Thursday of the month from 5:30-7 pm at local watering holes. They read mainly contemporary fiction, with a few non-fiction titles every once in a while. Copies of books are placed on hold for book club participants and are available to check out at the library. Titles for the next month’s meeting are announced a month before. They will also be available in e-edition, audiobook, large print, etc.
