Jimmy’s Book Club: The Real Inspector Hound

This June, Firebird is on the case with a full month of flatfoots, femme fatales, and forensics! “Mystery Month” will be chock full of great programming for all mystery lovers and aspiring gumshoes. June 9th will feature a great mystery selection for Firebird’s Book Club.

The Real Inspector Hound is Tom Stoppard’s (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Shakespeare in Love) surreal take on the mystery genre. Two theater critics, Moon and Birdboot, are forced to sit through a hackneyed murder mystery play. Like us, they are initially in the position of passive spectators, but as the evening progresses, their real-life drama melds with that of the play they are viewing until they are literally absorbed into the world of the play as active participants. Featuring droll humor, existential dread, and a dark twist at the end, The Real Inspector Hound is a fun read and a great entry into Stoppard’s work.
