Live Music: Harmonic Funktion

Harmonic FunKtion is a high-energy funk fusion band born in the heart of Gunnison, Colorado, in the spring of 2024. Built on the foundation of original grooves and infectious rhythms, the band’s mission is simple: make people move—and make it memorable.

The project began when seasoned musicians Frank Mangum (keyboards), known for his work with local favorites MILLK and 100 Mile House, and guitarist Dave Fisher (formerly of Skylar Nimbus and Confluence Band) came together with over 60 years of combined musical experience. Their songwriting partnership sparked the beginnings of a sound that’s both soulful and danceable.

Drummer—and local kayaking legend—Josh Young joined next, locking in a tight rhythm section with bassist Caleb Roach. With groove at the core, the band’s original material began to take shape. The addition of multi-instrumentalist Maggie Leslie (keyboards/guitar) added depth and dynamic songwriting to the mix, raising the band’s creative ceiling.

In true small-town magic, Gunnison delivered a powerhouse horn section featuring all-state trumpet player Ariston Awitan IV and saxophonist Erin Geye (MILLK, Gypsy Jazz Social Club), injecting smooth-yet-punchy brass lines into the band’s growing repertoire.

The final piece of the puzzle came with vocalist Sofija Andrew, whose commanding and soulful voice elevated Harmonic FunKtion into a fully-formed, high-impact live act. With her on board, the band delivers performances that are both musically rich and crowd-pleasingly explosive.
