Saving Hartman Castle is a compelling 26-minute documentary (Season 11, Episode 7 of Colorado Experience) that chronicles the history and preservation of the iconic Hartman Castle in Gunnison, Colorado .
The Story of Hartman Castle
Built in 1891 by town co-founder Alonzo Hartman and his wife Annie, the castle is a stunning example of Queen Anne–style Victorian architecture. The 130+ year‑old structure features patterned brickwork, elegant turrets, intricate woodwork, and ornate interiors—like Annie’s private attic painting loft with sweeping views. Its design reflected the Hartmans’ social stature and deep commitment to the Gunnison community.
Preservation in Progress
The documentary follows a grassroots nonprofit, the Hartman Castle Preservation Corporation, as they work to raise approximately $700K–800K to purchase and restore the castle and adjacent carriage house on 2½ acres. Their goal: secure the property through community funding and rehab this architectural treasure as a public-use space rather than let it fall into disrepair or demolition.
Gunnison locals convened at Western Colorado University for a free screening featuring opening remarks by community leaders like Dr. Duane Vandenbushe.
Highlighting more than just architecture, the film captures the emotional legacy of the Hartmans and the enduring pioneer spirit alive in Gunnison today
Why It Matters
Saving Hartman Castle isn’t only about preserving a building—it’s about reconnecting with a foundational era in Gunnison’s history. The Hartmans were pioneers whose legacy is embedded in every brick, and restoring the castle will provide a tangible link to the past for generations to come.
